PASTOR TO PEOPLE

Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. (Psalm 115:1)

Today we give thanks to our God and offer praise for the glory of His name. At the Lake this morning, we celebrated the joy of changed lives with unforgettable baptisms. This afternoon we’ll gather as a church family for MoodyFest, celebrating together God’s work in our lives. Now here in this special installation service, we have another moment to give glory to God for His love and faithfulness.

Two years ago, if you had told me all that God in His kindness would do in bringing us to The Moody Church in Chicago, I would have thought you were nuts. But as God would have it, He took our family on a faith journey that ultimately led to this place. Through highs and lows and twists and turns, God led us here with blinding clarity. Yet we continue to be as surprised as anyone. But we are grateful. We’re grateful for the warmth and joy of our Moody Church family. We’re grateful for this new city we now call home. And we’re grateful to God for His evident love and faithfulness. Not to us, but to Your name be the glory, Lord!

Krista and I want to extend a special thank you to our family and friends who have joined us today: Duane & Susan Miller, Don & Cherie Friend, Grace Hensarling, Anne Hensarling, Jayna Williams, Amy Williams, Dr. Paul Dixon, Dr. Mark Yarbrough, Dr. Mark Young, Scott Ridout, and Dr. Mark Jobe. We are touched and honored by your presence with us today. Thank you.

To our Moody Church family: Thank you for the honor of being your pastor. May we find great joy in serving Christ together in this great city for many years to come, for the glory of His name.

You are loved, more than you know!

On March 29, 2020, The Moody Church voted overwhelmingly to call Philip Miller as our next Senior Pastor. This vote came an unexpected 1,911 days after Pastor Lutzer announced he was stepping down to become Pastor Emeritus. Many of you were part of our church family during those five years and can testify to the faithfulness and goodness of God as we waited on Him.

If the Lord had told us in advance that His perfect timing involved a wait of more than five years, I think I would have found it difficult! But our Heavenly Father was faithful during that time and the wait was not without purpose. The Lord prepared us for Pastor Philip, and Pastor Philip for The Moody Church.

You may recall that Pastor Philip was approached three times before agreeing to be considered for this role. God’s timing

is always perfect. We rejoice in God’s faithfulness, His timing, and in His choice of Pastor Philip—a man of God with a heart for the Lord and His people.

We have been richly blessed. And on behalf of the Elders, I again want to thank the Pastoral Search Committee for their years of hard work along with you, our brothers and sisters, for your joyful obedience to the Lord that kept our church on mission during those five years. To God be the glory!

For the Elder Council,

Bervin Peterson

PHILIP MILLER

Philip Miller is the 17th Senior Pastor of The Moody Church. Philip holds a B.A in Pre-Seminary Bible from Cedarville University (’04) and a Th.M. in Pastoral Leadership and New Testament Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary (’10). His wife, Krista, also holds an Th.M. degree from DTS.

Philip began his ministry career in 2008 as a staff intern at Stonebriar Community Church. Under Chuck Swindoll’s leadership, he gained valuable teaching and leadership skills, and was ordained by Dr. Swindoll in May 2010.

In 2010, following his time at Stonebriar, he became an Associate Pastor at Christ Community Church in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles. He oversaw all of the Adult Ministries at the DeKalb campus of this large multi-site church—the equivalent of The Moody Church’s combined Communities and Equipping ministries.

In August of 2013, he answered the call to become Senior Pastor of Westwood Baptist Church in Olympia, WA, transitioning leadership from the outgoing founding pastor, who had served for 41 years. Then in June of 2020, he begin serving as Senior Pastor of The Moody Church.

Philip is a visionary leader who believes that people flourish as followers of Jesus when they live deeply in the gospel, experience the healing of true community, and join Jesus on mission in their world. He is committed to cultivating a gospel-centered church that welcomes spiritual explorers, promotes gospel clarity in culturally-engaging ways, inspires passionate worship, fosters deep spiritual vitality, empowers people to holistic discipleship, and catalyzes a multiplication movement of gospel renewal both locally and globally.

Philip enjoys cycling and all things outdoors, Garrett’s caramel popcorn, Lou Malnati‘s deep dish pizza, and Henry Weinhard‘s root beer. He and Krista have four children: Claire (10), Violet (8), Cora (6), and Jude (4).
