The Light of the Gospel

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord,

Treasure in Jars of Clay

16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Life in the Spirit

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set youfree in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

Greeting to the Seven Churches

John to the seven churches that are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth.

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Series: ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN

Message: Treasures in Heaven

Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24 ESV

Pastor Philip Miller

In Jesus, the Kingdom of Heaven is breaking into reality, establishing a beachhead of the new creation. And Jesus is inviting us to follow Him into this cosmic disruption. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime, to get in on the ground floor of the greatest Kingdom the world will ever know.

Here’s our choice: Will we keep on investing our time and energy and resources in the Kingdom of Earth? Or, will we see this breakthrough for what it is, will we understand the opportunity, will we get in early and invest in the Kingdom of Heaven?

In this passage from Matthew 6:19-24, we find three deep insights into what it means to invest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

The Two Treasures

  1. The Two Treasures: Our treasure is our trajectory. If the treasure of our life is an earthly one, the trajectory of our souls is heart-wrenching, because we’ll always feel at risk of losing it all. But if our treasure is in heaven, our trajectory is different, because our future is incorruptible. A heart tied to heavenly treasures can weather any storm. Choose wisely, because our treasure is your trajectory.

The Two Eye

2. The Two Eyes: Our beholding is our becoming. What we see and savor, shapes the character of our inner life far more than we realize. We can’t help that we are designed for worship, but we get to choose what we worship. And what we worship will either devour us or fulfill our deepest longings.

The Two Masters

3. The Two Masters: Our loyalty is our lifestyle. Whatever we worship in life will win our allegiance, because our loyalty is our lifestyle. We serve what we seek; we live for what we long for. God is the only master who gives us our life back when we serve Him.

Takeaway: What are you living for?

Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Episode 31: Your Heavenly Investment Portfolio

Pastor Philip and Pastor Eric

Podcast Updated Weekly

How do we change our desire for money so that we want to invest in the things of heaven?

In this conversation, Pastors Philip and Eric discuss the passage from Matthew 6:19-24 about investing in the treasures of heaven and the importance of refocusing how we think about our money, energy, and time.

At our core, everyone wants security, significance, and satisfaction. The problem is that we try to satisfy these core needs with money and not God. Giving trains our souls by releasing our earthly treasures in a way that demonstrates our heart’s desire for God. Through generosity, we gain freedom over money and train our appetites for the things of heaven.

They address important questions from the sermon, including:

1) Why does Jesus talk about money instead of a topic like our time? Why is money the focus?

2) Why does money have such a tight hold on our hearts?

3) What does it look like to be devoted to God instead of money?

4) How do we balance investing in the things of heaven, while caring for our responsibilities here on earth?

5) How do we train our heart to the right kind of treasures?

6) How do we lessen our desire for money and live for heavenly treasure?

PASTOR TO PEOPLE

I still remember the day I first met Grandpa Friend in his hometown of Soap Lake in the irrigated farmlands of Eastern Washington. Krista and I had been dating awhile, and it was time to meet her extended family. LeRoy Friend raised cows to sell at auction, and was as salt-of-the-earth as they come. I know almost nothing about cows, but I was eager to strike up a conversation. “What are cows selling for at market these days?” I inquired. “You mean on the hoof?” he asked in reply. Totally lost, I hesitatingly offered, “Sure…” “Oh, about ninety- five dollars a hundred-weight.” I’ve since worked out what he was saying, but at the time I was utterly clueless.

We eventually found another, deeper, and better point of connection. LeRoy loved God’s Word. Next to his recliner you could always find his leather Bible worn from use, that is, as long as it wasn’t in his lap. The shelf to his left was lined with Bible commentaries, including a complete set by our own Warren Wiersbe. He loved theology and was overjoyed that his granddaughter was studying the Bible in college. His quiet faith and commitment to the Scriptures were precious hallmarks of his life.

On June 16, 2022, Grandpa LeRoy Thomas Friend went home to be with Jesus after a 91-year pilgrimage on earth, including 68 years of marriage with his sweetheart, Grandma Florence. We cherish the time we had with him and rejoice in the glories that are now his in Christ. He was a simple farmer with a deep faith and an enormous legacy.

And he was loved, more than he knew.

But he certainly knows now.
