Prayer Guide

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” and “ You have not because you ask not” are just two of so many biblical encouragements to seek our Father in prayer. During these times of disruption and crisis, it is even more essential that we gather to pray, to confess, and to seek the Lord together…

Christ’s Example of Humility

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Lights in the World

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

The Prayer Walk

A quick guide to praying for the world around you.”

Josue R. Reyes

“Prayer walks are special times of prayer, taking you into the streets of your city to pray for others you may encounter. Before I share suggestions on strategy, we should agree on a working definition of prayer. Prayer is often defined by people as “talking to God.” To be honest, most of us do most of the talking during prayer, and so at times we feel awkward when there is silence and we run out of words to say. This is a rather limited view of what prayer really is: a conversation. We speak to God, but we should also listen to God. Prayer is really a two-way communication through which a deep relationship is forged by the sharing of the heart. A prayer walk is a great opportunity to better understand how God sees and feels about those who live and work around you. With this in mind, let’s plan our prayer walk.

Before you go out, determine how much time your will spend in prayer and select a route that is familiar to you. Stay safe and pay attention to your surroundings.

First, invite the Holy Spirit to speak. As you start your walk ask the Holy Spirit to show you what He sees. Ask Him to make you sensitive to people and their needs. This may not be the time to stop and feed the poor, but to capture a vision of how God sees the world around you.

Second, acknowledge what you hear. In your response repeat to the Lord what you have seen and heard. Let Him know what you understand the Holy Spirit is showing you. It could be as simple as “Lord, I see how much You love my neighbor.” Or “I am sorry for the pain that our disobedience brings to Your heart.”

Third, be available to be used. Ask the Lord how He would want you respond to the need around you. Resist the temptation to respond superficially to a need or to ignore a problem because is too big for you to solve. The Lord already knows your limitations; He desires to use you despite them, as a small instrument in the hands of the Master Builder.

Finally, praise Him for his mercy. Close your prayer walk with praise for what you have seen and for the Lord’s loving kindness. Thank Him for revealing His heart to you.”
