Advent Reading – The Candle of Hope

Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. – Jeremiah 33:14–15

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit… – Isaiah 11:1

…The Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. – Isaiah 7:14

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. – Isaiah 60:1–3

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see,
we wait for it with patience. – Romans 8:18–25

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king.

And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.

SERIES: THE COMING KING

MESSAGE: THE AWAITED KING

Scripture: Matthew 1:1-17 ESV

Pastor Philip Miller

Advent means “arrival” and it’s full of awaiting. In the Old Testament era, the people of God were awaiting the advent of their Messiah, the Anointed One, who would fulfill all of God’s covenant promises to His people.

And two thousand years ago, a baby was born in Bethlehem, Jesus the Son of God, who is called the Christ, the Messiah, and the Hope of all the World. He died on a cross, was buried, raised, and ascended to the right hand of God the Father, from whence He shall return to set all things to rights.

And so too, in the New Testament era, the people of God are awaiting the advent of our Lord and Savior, the crucified and risen Son of God, the return of the King of kings, and Lord of lords, who shall reign forever and ever!

So here we are, in the days between the advents. We are both rejoicing in The King who has come, and longing for The King who is coming. In this four-part sermon series, we will be digging into Matthew’s biographical account of the coming of Jesus the King.

Matthew begins with an extensive genealogy, documenting Jesus’ ancestral pedigree. This is one of those passages we might be tempted to just skip over when we come to it. But in many ways, this genealogy sets the table for just who Jesus is and what He’s come to do. Like the opening act of a great play or movie, the beginning foreshadows the end.

Why is it so important that we understand Jesus’ connection with Abraham, David, and the Exile? It’s all about who Jesus is and what He’s come to do.

This sermon considers each of these three anchor-points in turn under the headings:

The Promised Seed

1) The Promised Seed: Jesus come to reverse the curse and unleash blessing. All that was forfeited by Adam and Eve, Jesus comes to reclaim. All that was promised to Abraham, Jesus comes to fulfill. This is “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of Abraham.”

The Royal Heir

2) The Royal Heir: Jesus comes to restore the throne and ascend in glory. All that was forfeited by Solomon, Jesus comes to reclaim. All that was promised to David, Jesus comes to fulfill. This is “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David.”

The Redeeming Servant

3) The Redeeming Servant: Jesus comes to end the exile and begin a new covenant. All that was lost in the Exile, Jesus comes to reclaim. All that was promised in the Servant, Jesus comes to fulfill. This is “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of the Exile.”

Takeaway: Jesus is the Hero we’ve all been waiting for.

Don’t you see, he’s our substitute in every way? In this genealogy, Matthew is foreshadowing who Jesus is and what He’s come to do.

Jesus is Abraham’s “Promised Seed” come to reverse the curse and unleash blessing.

Jesus is David’s “Royal Heir” come to restore the throne and ascend in glory.

Jesus is Israel’s “Redeeming Servant” come to end the exile and begin a new covenant.

He’s the Hero we’ve all been waiting for, and His name is Jesus.

Zechariah’s Prophecy

68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has visited and redeemed his people
69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David,
70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
71 that we should be saved from our enemies
    and from the hand of all who hate us;
72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant,
73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us
74     that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
    might serve him without fear,
75     in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Episode 44: The Hero of Your Story

Pastor Philip and Pastor Eric

Podcast Updated Weekly

What do Taylor Swift, Herod, Spider Man, and the genealogy of Jesus all have in common?

In this conversation, Pastor Philip and Pastor Eric discuss Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus and how to live out lessons from this unique historical time line. They address key questions from the sermon, including:

1) How accurate is the genealogy timeline? Were any generations skipped over?

2) Who is your favorite super hero? And why do we love super heroes so much?

3) We all want to be the hero in our story, but always come up short of expectations. What should we do when we realize that we’re not super heroes?

4) Why does our culture root for the anti-hero?

5) In an anti-hero culture, how do we help people to see the beauty of a real hero?

6) Would Jesus be a better hero if he didn’t have to die?

PASTOR TO PEOPLE

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and family this past week!

Today we turn the page to Advent and the season of Christmas. There’s a lot going on at The Moody Church in the next few weeks. Here are some of the highlights:

Advent Sermon Series—The Coming King: During the Advent season, we’ll be tracking with the Christmas story as we study the first two chapters of the Gospel of Matthew. We’ll see how Jesus is The Coming King, not only for the world, but for each of our lives as well. He’s the one who redeems our stories, fulfills our lives, and enables us to live life abundantly. Jesus is the Hero we’ve all been waiting for.

Christmas Concert: This event is the highlight of our Christmas season. Our Choir and Orchestra perform classic carols and holiday favorites; and our sanctuary is stunning with dramatic lighting. Free tickets are available on our website!

Special Services: On December 18, our Children’s Choir performs an uplifting Christmas play that shares the true meaning of Christmas. Then on Christmas Eve, join us for a simple and beautiful service where we celebrate the birth of Jesus and fill the sanctuary with candlelight.

Christmas Day: We have a unique opportunity this year to focus in on the message of Christmas as the holiday falls on a Sunday. We’re going to have a kid-friendly, casual worship service together as a church family on Christmas morning. So, open those stockings and presents and then come join us (kids can wear their jammies!) for a warm and festive morning together! My family and I are already looking forward to spending this Christmas with our Moody Church family!

Remember, you are loved more than you know!
