Scripture Reading from Colossians 2:3–14, Ephesians 2:8–10, Romans 5:1–5 ESV

Colossians 2, Ephesians 2, Romans 5, ESV and Audio

Colossians 2:3–14

in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

Alive in Christ

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Ephesians 2:8–10

By Grace Through Faith

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Romans 5:1–5

Peace with God Through Faith

5 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Reformation Day

Message: God, the Cross, and You

Scripture: Romans 3:19-26 ESV

Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Erwin Lutzer

Scripture: Romans 3:19-26 ESV

Romans 3 and Audio

19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

The Righteousness of God Through Faith

21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Scripture: Romans 3:11, 13, 15, 18 ESV

No One Is Righteous

“None is righteous, no, not one;
11     no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.
13
“Their throat is an open grave;
    they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
15
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
18
    “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Reformation Day

Sunday, October 31, 2021

Message: God, the Cross, and You

Scripture: Romans 3:19-26 ESV

Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Erwin Lutzer

On reformation Sunday, Pastor Lutzer returns to the pulpit for a special message from Romans 3. How can we be right with God?

Our corruption before God is seen by what we seek (v. 11), what we say (v.13), where we go (v.15), and what we see (v.18).

Only God can solve our dilemma: we are saved by God, from the wrath of God, for the glory of God. The cross, like a prism, reveals God’s incredible attributes to us:

1) It magnifies the justice of God

2) It magnifies the grace of God

3) It magnifies the glory of God

The bottom line:

God purchased us at high cost for Himself, saving even the worst of sinners.

SERMON SERIES

THE INVISIBLE WORLD

Where the Real Battles are Lost or Won

Things are not what they appear to be. Behind the world of our senses—the world we see and touch—there is a spiritual universe that can only be explored by studying the Scriptures. This unseen world, inhabited by God, angels, and demons, affects us as both physical and spiritual beings. The realities of this spiritual realm are investigated through the lens of Scripture with the goal of experiencing personal transformation. It’s in the invisible world where the real battles are lost or won.

PASTOR TO PEOPLE

Happy Reformation Day!

On this day, over half a millennia ago, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. His action on October 31, 1517 was the match that lit a fire that would spread and become known as the Protestant Reformation. At the heart of the Reformation stood the five Solas. These doctrinal distinctives characterized the gulf that existed between Reformers like Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon, John Calvin, and Ulrich Zwingli and the the teachings of the 16th century Roman Catholic Church. In the spirit of Reformation Day, I thought it would be good to remind us what the five Solas are.

Sola Scriptura means “Scripture alone” and expresses the conviction that God’s inspired Word is the only unerring, all- sufficient, and final authority for the faith and practice of the church.

Solus Christus means “Christ alone” and holds forth the beautiful truth that Christ and Christ alone is the basis upon which sinners are justified in God’s sight.

Sola fide means “faith alone” and maintains that those who believe in Christ receive His redemption only through faith.

Sola gratia means “grace alone” and proclaims that all of salvation, from beginning to end, is only by the grace of God.

Soli Deo gloria means “glory to God alone” rightfully asserting that God alone deserves all glory, honor, and praise for our salvation.

I can think of no one better to help us celebrate this Reformation Day than our own Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Erwin Lutzer. I look forward to his time with us this morning as he speaks on “God, the Cross, and You!” I know we’ll be blessed.

Remember, you are loved, more than you know!
