A Living Stone and a Holy People

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Divisions in the Church

But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human?

What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.

10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.

MESSAGE: HOW TO BE THE CHURCH

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:1–18 ESV

Pastor Justin May

1) Personal Maturity (vv. 1–4)

The only way we can handle the good stuff.

Personal maturity is important to be able to enjoy the gift of the church. But Paul wants the Corinthian church that their maturity isn’t developing because they are divided.

2) United by Humility (vv. 5–9)

The only way we can go from “me” to “we.”

Humility is critical to the unity of the church if we are ever going to go from “me” to “we.” If the members of the church aren’t united in humility, the church won’t hold together.

3) Corporate Mission: Be the Temple (vv. 10–18)

The only way we can truly “be the church.”

If we are to properly build a church, Paul is telling us that we must recognize we have a shared mission. All of us together, when we are assembled, are meant to be God’s temple!

We have a shared mission to BE THE CHURCH, to be the place where God’s love is felt more powerfully, where God’s truth is proclaimed, where broken people can come and find true rest, where people tossed about by the storms of this world can find true peace, purpose, and joy.

If we are holding on to reasons to divide from one another, we don’t stand a chance at accomplishing this mission. We must be reconciled to one another.

Takeaway:

If the church stops being the church, it becomes irrelevant.

Benediction

Final Greetings

11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 All the saints greet you.

14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

PASTOR TO PEOPLE

One of the highlights of our trip to Washington a couple weeks ago was getting to see Krista’s Grandma. Grandma Florence has lived on a farm in Soap Lake for decades, and it’s always a joy to go and visit. This was our first time back since Grandpa LeRoy went to be with Jesus last year.

Grandma’s health has been a challenge of late, and she’s living with nearly constant pain. But you would never know it. Her cheerful conversation and gracious love of her family are precious and overflowing. And she’s a prayer warrior. Everyday she lifts her family, friends, and church up to the Lord.

Last Saturday night, Grandma woke up uncomfortable at two o’clock in the morning and couldn’t get back to sleep. Her in-home care nurse came in to attend to her and they fell into conversation. And in an interaction that is so very Grandma, she led her nurse to faith in Christ.

Grandma Florence inspires me. Every moment matters. We’re here on purpose. And we’re not done until God calls us home!

Because we are loved, more than we know!
