The Great Commandment

35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

The Great Commission

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

PASTOR TO PEOPLE

The call to missions is not just to those abroad, it is also to our neighbors across the street. When Jesus commissions us to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19), it’s a commission for here and there, near and far. Jesus’ disciples are to go and be His “witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

Every one of Jesus’ disciples is called to this mission. We’ve been entrusted with the Gospel and are sent as ambassadors of the reconciliation God has made possible through Jesus Christ. Whether we go around the world or across the street, we are all missionaries with the greatest news the world has ever known.

Every single one of us knows people far from Jesus who are near to us where we live, work, learn, and play. We are supernaturally and strategically placed in a network of relationships to shine the love of Jesus and share His saving good news!

Today we turn our attention to the streets of Chicago and the local mission we are all called to. This city is full of people that God loves and that Jesus died for. They may never come to church, but we, the church, can go to them! That’s what it means to go and be the church—we are a people changing our world through mission!

Because those around us are loved, more than they know!
